Configured is a selection of contemporary representational painting curated by Perth artist Kevin Robertson.
Configured situates current figurative practice in a distinctly postmodern context by selecting artists who re-work images from the past and explore contemporary imagery.
From Kevin Robertson’s unconventional figure studies to Jo Darbyshire’s haunting under-water jellyfish paintings to Garry Pumfrey’s suburban delis and Joanna Lamb’s uneasy representations of the suburban landscape, this show features a range of subjects and styles.
Configured was assisted by Art on the Move, the National Touring Exhibition Structure for Western Australia through the State Exhibition and Touring Funds.
Transience is a parallel exhibition to Configured which looks at the work of a small number of very recent graduates from the three university art schools in Perth, all of whom are using figurative techniques.
Their work can be characterised by a shared interest in small worlds, domestic and personal, and in memory, reminiscence and impermanence.
Together the exhibitions reflect a continuing intense concentration on personal experience in painting in Western Australia.
