Never have ‘fakes’ been more prevalent — or are they? In this breakfast panel, we dive deep into the world of fakes: fake news, fake identities, fake art. Join Ted Snell, David Glance, Jani McCutcheon and Kathryn Prince for a panel discussion over breakfast at the University Club.
We ask the questions: How do we separate the fakes? Does the role of technology assist with unearthing authenticity, or add to the problem? What are the conventions that allow actors and politicians to fake sincerity? Do emotions technologies measure sincerity or do they capture the so-called biological or basic emotions in a fairly primitive way? With studios getting over the uncanny valley hurdle, what are the legal implications, and how do we respond to the ethical dilemmas? Why does manufactured reality seem more real? And when is a fake desirable?

High Tea with Philippa Nikulinsky

Share an afternoon with artist Philippa Nikulinksy beginning with an exhibition tour of Nikulinsky Naturally at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery followed by a high tea hosted at the University Club of Western Australia. For nearly 50 years artist Philippa Nikulinsky has travelled throughout the state to record, draw and paint its phenomenal natural history. In this event, Nikulinsky recounts stories from her career focusing on a lifetime fascination with the flora and fauna of the arid lands of Western Australia.

Why are scandals in the arts so newsworthy? Whether it’s a fake, an act of vandalism or a theft, an offensive nude or a piece of incomprehensible sculpture, everyone gets involved, everyone has an opinion, and the risk-takers, ratbags and rogues behind the latest scandal become instant celebrities.
Join UWA Chief Cultural Officer Ted Snell to explore another four scandals, this time involving the destruction of artworks by people regarded as either mad or heroic. You may never have heard about these events, but they might change your views about art, artists and the society in which we live.

An exhibition tour for visitors with visual impairment.
Join us for a touch and verbal descriptive tour of the current exhibition Sculptural Silver. Artist Philip Noakes and a trained guide delivers descriptions of the visual elements of artworks exhibited, along with tactile opportunities with selected pieces of Noakes' artwork. Tours are free to attend and aimed at visitors with visual impairments.
Light refreshments will be served.

Going Slow: Art and Mindfulness

Slow down your day by joining us for a different kind of art gallery tour. Much like a mindfulness exercise where you focus on your breathing, in this tour we settle our minds on the artwork. We begin this session with a close observation of selected artworks from the exhibitions Sculptural Silver and Naturally Nikulinsky, followed by an informal discussion on the themes of empathy and emotional intelligence.
