Never have ‘fakes’ been more prevalent — or are they? In this breakfast panel, we dive deep into the world of fakes: fake news, fake identities, fake art. Join Ted Snell, David Glance, Jani McCutcheon and Kathryn Prince for a panel discussion over breakfast at the University Club.
We ask the questions: How do we separate the fakes? Does the role of technology assist with unearthing authenticity, or add to the problem? What are the conventions that allow actors and politicians to fake sincerity? Do emotions technologies measure sincerity or do they capture the so-called biological or basic emotions in a fairly primitive way? With studios getting over the uncanny valley hurdle, what are the legal implications, and how do we respond to the ethical dilemmas? Why does manufactured reality seem more real? And when is a fake desirable?

Share an afternoon with artist Philippa Nikulinksy beginning with an exhibition tour of Nikulinsky Naturally at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery followed by a high tea hosted at the University Club of Western Australia. For nearly 50 years artist Philippa Nikulinsky has travelled throughout the state to record, draw and paint its phenomenal natural history. In this event, Nikulinsky recounts stories from her career focusing on a lifetime fascination with the flora and fauna of the arid lands of Western Australia.

Going Slow: Art and Mindfulness

Philip Noakes: Sculptural Silver
Presented by Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery
Philip Noakes, one of the foremost silversmiths working and teaching in Australia, has dedicated much of the past few years to his passion for silversmithing. Focusing on form and enlivening his work with textures created by hammering, engraving and filing, he has produced a magnificent and varied collection of new hollowware and sculptural objects together with a small collection of jewellery reflecting the hollow forms. This elegant body of work includes over 40 new vessels in sterling silver, Britannia silver, fine silver, heat flamed copper and various carat gold is the largest hollowware exhibition in Western Australia since the 1970s.

The Artist and Her Work
Presented by Cruthers Collection of Women's Art
Lady Sheila Cruthers took an immediate shine to women’s self-portraiture when she began collecting art in the mid-1970s. This interest expanded into a collection strategy she referred to as ‘the artist and her work’ – she would collect an artist’s work in addition to a self-portrait, with the two works often hung side by side in the family home. Now housed at the University of Western Australia, the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art holds over 100 self-portraits, many collected as a result of this strategy.
The Artist and Her Work utilises this unusual juxtaposition to showcase the breadth and depth of women’s art practice, replicating the dense and vibrant hanging style of the collection’s original domestic context.

Noongar Boodja
Presented by UWA Cultural Precinct
Noongar Boodja is a 35-minute documentary film made by young Aboriginal people from Albany. This stunning cinematic story explores with Menang Elders significant cultural places and the meaning behind their Noongar names. Its first public screening received a standing ovation from the 700-strong Albany audience and since the screening, there has been a wave of support for dual place naming, which was argued strongly by Elders in the film. Noongar Boodja was developed as part of CAN's Place Names project that draws on Professor Len Collard's long-term research.
The NAIDOC week screening of Noongar Boodja will be followed by a Q&A with the people behind the film and project. Come and share in this powerful story and discuss the value of dual naming on Noongar country.

Winterreise - The Phenomenon

Andrew Foote with Cecilia Sun and Mark Coughlan present Schubert’s mammoth work for solo voice and piano – Winterreise. Commencing with a lecture-recital discussing some background to the early voice recitals and para-musical elements of the work, the week concludes with the entire work presented in two halves – a reconstruction performance with fortepiano, and the more usual modern presentation with pianoforte (but with a twist).

Kew's Forgotten Queen

Join us for a screening of Kew’s Forgotten Queen, a documentary celebrating the work of one of the most prolific botanical artists of the Victorian age – Marianne North. At a time when women barely left their parlour rooms, North defied convention as she travelled alone navigating the world twice, from Borneo to Brazil to Japan, in her pursuit of documenting every living plant on her canvas. Marianne North (24 October 1830 – 30 August 1890) was prolific biologist and botanical artist, widely renowned for her plant and landscape paintings, plant discoveries, writings, and the creation of her gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Join textile artist Pauline Franklyn and experience the wonder of creating your own three-dimensional seamless vessel. During this workshop you will learn to lay wool fleece, explore colour, surface design and form to make a unique fully felted vessel to take home. All materials and equipment are provided.
Pauline is a highly skilled artist, working intuitively and experimenting with textiles to create gorgeous artefacts through techniques such as collage, nuno and resist. She has run textile workshops since 2005 and her work is available in the LWAG Shop.

What makes a butterfly's wings special? And what are seashells made of? Come see for yourself and get excited about science!
Viewing the natural world under a microscope is a never-ending source of fascination for children and adults alike. Learn to use a binocular microscope to examine nature right up close. Participants will collect material from the University?s gardens to examine under the microscope, as well as be given butterfly wings, minerals and seashells to look at. All children will be given an amethyst crystal to examine and then take home.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to either leave participants or stay for the workshop.

Led by one of Perth's premier young percussionists Jackson Vickery, Discover! Percussion helps budding musicians aged 8-12 years leap into the wonderful world of percussion. This session will allow students to explore a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments and learn new and exciting beats and rhythms!
These hands-on sessions are suitable for complete beginners, as well as those who have some prior musical experience, such as those who have completed UWA JMS Programs or who have started percussion through their school.

Wild Flowers

Enter the delightful world of native southwest flowers. Together, participants will explore the unique colours, shapes, and traits of some of Perth’s local wildflowers. Using the drawings of Perth artist Philippa Nikulinsky as inspiration, participants will create their own wild and colourful sculptural floral bouquets which they can gift to someone special. Come and let your flower love blossom!

Seedpod and Gumnut Creatures

Create the characters of your imagination from seedpods, leaves and plants of the Australian bush. Inspired by storybook creatures such as May Gibbs’ Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and the current botanical exhibition Nikulinsky Naturally, create tiny sculptures using felt, dried native plant material and seedpods. Step into a world of magic and wonder and create your own unique bushland buddies.

An Exploration into Fossils for Junior Paleontologists
Presented by the EdCC Earth Science Museum
Calling all dinosaur lovers! Come and discover what palaeontologists do in the field as they unearth centuries-old fossils.
Become a junior paleontologist and learn about fossils, handle fossil material and unearth a fossil to take home. In addition to being given a fossil to take home, participants will receive a museum fossil hunt workbook to record their observations.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to either leave participants or stay for the workshop.
