Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery

HERE&NOW2012

Further information

HERE&NOW12 is the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery’s inaugural annual exhibition of early-career, contemporary Western Australian artists that opens on 10 August.

It surveys the activities of artist-run initiatives (ARIs) and places craft-based practices and DIY endeavours within the scope of the Gallery, presenting an experimental and interconnected system of art-making unique to this time and this place – Western Australia 2012.

Three local gallieres will serve as satellite venues, copresenting a program that complements and expands on works displayed in the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.

The exhibition framework relates to the way Western Australia is positioned within international contemporary art. In this context, Curator Katie Lenanton, envisages WA as a “galactic microcosm – a system held together by mutual gravitation, isolated from similar systems by vast regions of space.”

Exhibition date

Friday 10 August - Saturday 6 October 2012

Artists at LWAG

Participating artists engage with DIY and exploratory artistic strategies. For this exhibition, their practices are sited within the context of contemporary craft.

  • Tom Freeman: Tom’s new collection of meticulous drawings are informed by recent journeys that retrace and remake family histories, narratives and memories.
  • Ben Kovacsy: Ben’s practice intertwines craft, installation and sculpture to investigate how traditional manufacturing techniques can be re-validated in a contemporary context.
  • Clare Peake : Combining glass and clay sculptures with detailed drawings, Clare provides the viewer with a partial navigational structure or a point of access to consider how to make tangible the structuring and restructuring of an idea, from conceptualisation to articulation.
  • Jacob Ogden Smith: Jacob creates a shambolic pottery diorama to provide insight into the artists' ceramics practice and processes otherwise unseen.
